WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez, a Latino labor leader in California, is one of the heroic labor figures of the 20th century who led a movement dedicated to improving the lives of those who toil in the fields of our nation; and
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was a recognized national leader in the fight for civil rights for meaningful social change by peaceful means for Latinos, all racial minorities, and women and under his leadership mobilized many Latinos to register to vote; and
WHEREAS, exercising the right to vote on various labor and civil rights issues gave rise to greater Latino political representation; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his noteworthy contribution to our country, Cesar Chavez, who died of natural causes in 1993, was posthumously awarded in 1994 the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton; and
WHEREAS, on August 18, 2000 California Governor Gray Davis signed into law a bill declaring March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Leaming in observance of his birthday and to honor his life and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, curriculum is being developed for schools in the state to conduct lessons in nonviolence, self-sacrifice, and social justice to be drawn from the life of Cesar Chavez; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, on the tenth day of March 2021, that the Board ofTrustees of the Oxnard Union High School District proclaims March 31 as Cesar E. Chavez Day in recognition of his contributions and accomplishments and encourages all educational communities to commemorate this occasion with appropriate instructional activities.
