AFFIRMING THE COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION, WELLNESS, SAFETY AND WELLBEING OF OUR ASIAN, FILIPINO, and PACIFIC ISLANDER STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

WHEREAS, Oxnard Union High School District believes in collaborative processes that allow for inclusive curriculum, problem solving of social justice issues, and the development of best practices that positively impact student achievement and promote student wellness, particularly for students who are Asian, Black, Filipino, Indigenous, Latin-X, LGBTQIA+, Pacific Islander, and others who are traditionally underrepresented; and

WHEREAS, Oxnard Union High School District celebrates the rich diversity of its school community and recognizes the students, families, and employees of Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander descent who are valued members of the District; and

WHEREAS, Oxnard Union High School District has an obligation not only to prepare students academically but also to provide the foundation for personal growth and responsible participation in civic life; and

WHEREAS, Oxnard Union High School District formally recognizes the role of ethnic studies in the teaching of tolerance and understanding, as well as the strength diverse communities; and

WHEREAS, California is home to the largest population of Asian Americans, a group that has enriched the state in countless and invaluable ways; and

WHEREAS, Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander communities are suffering acts of discrimination, hate crimes, and violence; and

WHEREAS, people of Asian descent have suffered intense discrimination since California’s earliest days, including, but not limited to, the inhumane policies and treatment toward Chinese immigrants in the gold-mining era, the Chinese Exclusion Act, the persecution of Filipino American workers, and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War 11; and

WHEREAS, scientists have confined that COVID-19 does not respect borders, and the World Health Organization has warned against using geographic descriptors because they fuel ethnic discrimination; and

WHEREAS, Oxnard Union High School District affirms its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander community members and ensures that they are not alone and will be supported in helping to stop the spread of these hateful acts; and

WHEREAS, Oxnard Union High School District stands in solidarity with our Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander communities.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Oxnard Union High School District Board of Trustees supports our Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander community members and denounces any and all discrimination, hate crimes, and violent acts committed against Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander communities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Oxnard Union High School District recognizes the tremendous contributions made by our Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander communities and affinns its commitment to support the inclusion, wellness, and social-emotional needs of Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander students in the District.
