Good afternoon, OUHSD Families,

Extended School Closures

I know you have heard much news regarding our schools in the last day or so…and today is no different.  So, to begin, as discussed by SPI Thurmond, confirmed by Governor Newsom and announced by VCOE Superintendent, Stan Mantooth, all county school campuses will be closed for the remainder of the school year.  Schooling through distance learning, however, will continue until the completion of our regular school year calendar.  I am so proud of our staff who are working to develop a flexible, sustainable and thoughtful Distance Learning Plan.   If you have received a device and/or hotspot and have not yet checked-in with your teachers, please do so right away.  We still have hundreds of Hotspots to distribute, so keep your eyes opened for messages from your principal as to the distribution schedule.  Please let your principal know if you need a device or hot spot and did not get on the list yet.

Grading

We received guidance from the California Department of Education regarding grading, which gives us great flexibility.  Upon our return from spring break, we will convene a committee of teachers and administrators, who will thoroughly address all aspects of grading.  In the meantime, all teachers have been reminded that during this extended time of distance learning, grades may do no harm to existing grades and should be used only to inform instruction and give feedback to students.

Graduation/ End-of Year Activities

I know there are also many questions regarding our end-of-year activities, including Prom and Graduation.  First of all, our intent is to ensure that all students who were previously on-track to graduate do graduate.  After spring break, we will convene a remote meeting of our ASB students and advisors to discuss all possible options for our senior celebrations and ceremonies.  We commit to doing everything humanly possible to celebrate the Class of 2020, who have worked so hard throughout their educational careers.  Stay tuned….
