Oxnard Union High School District Superintendent Penelope DeLeon has been named the regional Superintendent of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators.
DeLeon is the winner in Region 13, which encompasses all of the school districts in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The Association of California School Administrators represents school leaders from more than 1,050 districts in the state in 19 regions.
“Dr. Deleon has proven to be an effective team builder and has the ability to focus all of our collective efforts on increasing student learning and success,” said Steve Hall, vice president of the district’s school board, in a written statement.
DeLeon has been superintendent of the Oxnard Union district, one of the largest school districts in the county, since May 2016. Since coming to the district she has worked to ensure multiple post-secondary options and push for every student to apply to college. She’s had a focus on college and career readiness and enacting systems of support which provide equity and access to rigorous curricula for all students.
