On December 3rd, students from Rio Mesa and Channel Islands came together to the Collection shopping center in Oxnard to build a holiday tree out of cans. The Student Nutrition Advisory Councils collected over 600 cans- during Thanksgiving break CIHS students even walked door to door in their neighborhoods to ask for donations.
This was the 5th Annual FoodShare Can-Tree event at the Collection. We had a great time serving our community, and meeting people from other organizations who built over 300 trees! Each tree was built with 600-800 cans, bringing in over 200,000 pounds of food in only three days.
With food pantries all over Ventura County, FoodShare feeds one in six members of our community, distributes 12 million pounds of food each year, and serves 10 million meals annually. Most of that food is donated from local farms and businesses.
We had no idea that so many people in our own county don’t always have access to food, and we can’t wait to help out again next year.
The Student Nutrition Advisory Councils at Rio Mesa and Channel Islands would like to thank everyone who helped with this event or donated cans of food. We are so grateful to our teachers, fellow students, and neighbors for your support.
