The Rotary Club of Oxnard continues to recognize outstanding teachers in the Oxnard School District, the Oxnard Union High School District, and the Rio School District. For the seventh year, the Rotary Club provides a gift basket and marble “apple for the teacher” for the recipient’s outstanding teaching and service to students, parents, and school. In partnership with the County Schools Federal Credit Union, the recognition also includes a monetary award for the teacher to help cover the many out-of-pocket expenses teachers incur. An additional corporate partner, the Courtyard by Marriott-Oxnard provides this special teacher a gift certificate for a one-night stay for two. The Teacher Recognition Program continues the efforts of the Rotary Club of Oxnard to thank those in the community who demonstrate outstanding Service Above Self, the motto of Rotary International.
On June 1, 2017, the Rotary Club of Oxnard was pleased to recognize John Grennan, a longtime Channel Islands High School Raider. John began teaching at CIHS almost 22 years ago (August 31st is his 22nd anniversary). He is a dedicated English teacher who also supervises the journalism class that produces the award winning CIHS newspaper, The Isle File. He guides students towards college and university attendance through his AVID classes. John Grennan is also very giving of his time, and it is not uncommon for him to be at campus on a Saturday working with students on the school newspaper. In addition, he is busy writing many college and scholarship recommendation letters for his students. In the past, these efforts have helped at least two students earn a Gates Millennium Scholarship. Students enjoy his engaging lessons, especially when he comes to class in character as Julius Cesar or Albus Dumbledore. In March, John is a fixture at the CIHS lunch-time March Madness two-ball contest, teaming up with a peer to show all the students that the older generation still has game. After school, he can be found in the library tutoring students and helping them with their homework. John is a believer in community service. He serves as an advisor for the Leading the Youth club, whose members tutor at an elementary school and participate in Coastal Clean-Up Day at local Oxnard beaches.
