The Rotary Club of Oxnard continues to recognize outstanding teachers in the Oxnard School District, the Oxnard Union High School District, and the Rio School District. For the fifth year, the Rotary Club provides a gift basket and a marble “apple for the teacher” for outstanding teaching and service to students, parents, and their school. In partnership with the County Schools Federal Credit Union, the recognition also includes a monetary award for the teacher to help cover the many out-of-pocket expenses teachers incur. The Teacher Recognition Program continues the efforts of the Rotary Club of Oxnard to thank those in the community who demonstrate outstanding Service Above Self, the motto of Rotary International.
On April 9th, the Rotary Club of Oxnard bestowed this honor upon Mr. Jeremiah Brennan, who has been a leader at Rio Mesa High School in the integration of technology into his instruction. Eight years ago, he began teaching all of his math classes in a computer lab. Mr. Brennan constantly seeks to find ways to make his subject matter both interesting and understandable to his students. For the last two years, he has been involved in the establishment of the Manufacturing, Engineering, Robotics, Industrial, Technology (MERIT) academy. With his help this academy has begun to flourish, as students connect in a very real way with the curriculum before them. The integration of performance tasks into the new state assessment will not be new to him or his students.
Mr. Brennan has also begun to provide staff development to other members of his department. What he has been doing for years is now becoming the new effort in education. His understanding of the processes and pitfalls is invaluable to his department and to teachers in other departments, as well. Mr. Brennan is a perfect example of a teacher leader who leads by example and expertise, not by position. He is always up to doing anything he can to help his peers and, as such, is widely respected throughout the campus by students, staff, and faculty.
