On May 8th I witnessed ACHS at its best. Our ASB sponsored a “senior” prom at Alma Via Of Camarillo (assisted living). Our students dressed up, decorated, pinned boutonnieres and corsages, shared cookies and sparkling cider, took prom pictures, socialized, heard impressive stories, and had a great time on the dance floor to old and new tunes. They danced with a 106 year old, people bouncing and swaying in their walkers and wheelchairs, a professional dancer from Greta Garbo movies, and a father-daughter resident pair. In fact, the father out-danced everyone, leading many of our girls on the floor between dances with his daughter. He said he had danced with his wife for over 40 years. (Most of the residents are over 80.)
Kudos to Michaeltore Smith, who had a smile on his face the whole time, and Madeline Mehrali, next year’s ASB Cabinet Secretary, who spearheaded the event.
It was beautiful.
