With a new year comes new programs. Such is the situation with Spartan Spotlight, which is the new vehicle for the students and faculty and staff at Rio Mesa to get all the announcements, club news, sports results and other information that needs to be publicized to the RMHS community. One of the major surprises this summer before the semester started was the addition of a news desk, donated by an alum who works for KEYT-TV, Senerey De Los Santos, which gives the program immediate “street cred” with the kids who work behind the desk for the show. Currently, Spartan Spotlight airs once a week during the months of October and November, with a big push to go “5-Live” in the second semester. Mr. Dabbs has been very supportive of the program and wants it to become a tool that the school uses to get out all the information possible in the 6-9 minute segment. Teachers are able to submit news from their clubs or classes, as was seen in the most recent episode when Ms. O’s Drama Club made a short clip asking for the students to donate old costumes or props to their drama group to help defray costs of productions later in the year. The reactions of the faculty and students of RMHS have been very positive and it is encouraging the Spartan Spotlight students to continue to improve and add segments that the students are wanting to see.
