The Rotary Club of Oxnard continues to recognize outstanding teachers in the Oxnard School District, the Oxnard Union High School District, and the Rio School District.  For the fourth year, the Rotary Club provides a gift basket and plaque of recognition for outstanding teaching and service to students, parents, and their school.  In partnership with the County Schools Federal Credit Union, the recognition also includes a monetary award for the teacher to help cover the many out-of-pocket expenses teachers incur.  Another corporate partner, the Hilton Garden Inn, provides a special gift certificate for the teacher recipient. The Teacher Recognition Program continues the efforts of the Rotary Club of Oxnard to thank those in the community who give outstanding Service Above Self, the motto of Rotary International.

On April 3rd, the Rotary Club of Oxnard bestowed this honor upon Mr. Dan Lucas, who has taught in the Channel Islands High School Science department since 1990 and has served as the Science Department Chairperson for the last 10 years.  Mr. Lucas’s strengths rest in his outstanding knowledge of the Science/Chemistry curriculum and his ability to engage his students in rigorous learning activities.   Mr. Lucas is the type of teacher who not only knows how to obtain data regarding his students’ academic performance but also uses that data to tailor the instructional needs of his students.  He is a leader in his department, and he does so by example.

The school’s Principal regards Dan Lucas as a master-level teacher.  He goes beyond to give the best of himself and dedicates his time wholeheartedly to his students    He is also well-liked among the entire staff because of his selflessness.   He works with newer, less-experienced teachers and helps them grow.  He has been the Math/Engineering/Science Achievement (MESA) advisor for 17 years, and this year they have taken CIHS to greater competitions, winning more medals at the MESA competition held at UCSB than any other institution represented.  He engages the students and teaches them to be critical thinkers, and they have used the abilities he has brought out in them to become outstanding students.  He devotes much extra time to his students who are preparing for the Advanced Placement exam in Chemistry.
