On November 13, Viking students and staff welcomed Captain Larry Vasquez, Naval Base Ventura County Commanding Officer. He and high school liaison Jennifer James were here to inquire as to how Hueneme High School works and supports our local military families. With our military families coming and going so often, and at different times during the school year, they wanted to know what programs and activities Hueneme had in place to accommodate the students of military families. Presentations from student leaders and student athletes, along with those from club advisors, coaches, and Academy coordinators were enough to impress Captain Vasquez. He strongly agreed with our philosophy of building connections between students and campus life in as many ways as possible. This philosophy already drives Hueneme High School, and it’s evident in school spirit and the way the students take care of their campus and of each other; it is also evident that the level of respect for each other has increased. Captain Vasquez shared that with all the wonderful things happening here at Hueneme, our campus has exceeded his expectations. We will continue to work with Captain Vasquez in an effort to make the transition as easy as possible for our military families and their students.
