Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 spent Saturday helping students from Oxnard High School’s Air Force JROTC build more storage space.

Five students and seven Seabees from the Naval Base Ventura County constructed shelves and renovated storage pods. The Navy team — made up of engineers, plumbers, welders and builders — worked one-on-one with the students, teaching them the proper use of the tools needed for the job.

During a safety demonstration, students learned about the importance of safety goggles and other precautionary methods, including hydration. From there, students made shelves, fastening 2-by-4-inch plywood with screws and nails, and prepared pipes that will be used as rods to hang uniforms.

“This is an amazing experience to have them here to work with us,” said Jesus Lomeli, a senior who joined JROTC as a freshman.
