Rio Mesa High girls water polo coach Keith McKnett wasn’t sure what kind of a performance he was going to get from his young team in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 wild-card match against El Rancho.

He was pleased when he got an upbeat effort from his Spartans in a 10-5 victory at home.

“I really didn’t know how today was going to go,” McKnett said. “We are a pretty good team when we move. We’re not so good when we don’t move. I thought today we moved pretty well.”

The game was a rematch of last year’s Division 4 first-round game, when Rio Mesa defeated El Rancho 14-7.
