The Yellowjackets had jumped out to an 11-0-2 record and a 2-0-1 league mark before Tuesday’s 2-0 loss at home against Rio Mesa. Even so, there is no doubt they are using last season’s shortcomings as motivation for the new campaign.
Oxnard experienced a rude awakening in the CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinals, losing 4-0 at home to Paramount. Coach Eric Montijo has been pleased to see the way his team has used that experience in going about its business this season.
“I’m just happy that we’ve built momentum from last year’s disappointment, losing in the quarterfinals,” Montijo said. “I think a lot of the kids, it was their first time there and because it was new to them, we had a little struggle in that quarterfinal game. I think we controlled the first half of the game and got close a couple times.
