Oxnard High had four shots at the goal in the first six minutes of its CIF-Southern Section Division 6 girls soccer playoff game against Santa Clara on Thursday. If the Yellowjackets had converted even one of them, they wouldn’t have had to wait until the second overtime to win it.

Michelle Rios’ goal off of a corner kick by Kailee Morehead three minutes into the second overtime period gave Oxnard a 2-1 victory over visiting Santa Clara in a first-round game.

Santa Clara (10-10-1), the third-place team in the Frontier League, had earned its way into the game by winning a 3-2 wild-card decision Tuesday against Rancho Alamitos. Oxnard (14-5-4), champion of the Pacific View League, plays Rim of the World or Shadow Hills on Tuesday.

Thursday’s game was dominated in large part by Oxnard, but Santa Clara’s grit and determination gave the home team all it could handle. At the start of the game, the Yellowjackets had two shots by Angie Lumbrano, and one each by Malia Spencer and Danielle Purdy. But Saints goalie Colleen Raab made two saves, one shot hit the crossbar and the other went wide to the left.
