Paloma Guzman promised not to cry, but she could not hold back her tears.

The Oxnard High School senior choked up as she explained why she wanted to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme as 2013 Youth of the Year.

“As I prepare for upcoming months, I remember the good times,” said Guzman, a club member for five years. “My friend and mentor Daniel Diaz told me these years would fly by, and his story about how he became Youth of the Year (2011) inspired me … because I wanted someone to look up to me the same way I looked up to him.”

Youth of the Year judges chose Guzman to compete at the county level. If she wins, she will have a chance to enter regional, state and national contests.
