Javier Vasquez of Channel Islands High finished second in the 182-pound division of the CIF-SS Masters tournament on Saturday, heading a list of eight county wrestlers who qualified for next week’s state championships.

Vasquez went 4-1 in the prestigious event at Temecula Valley High, losing only to No. 4 seed Immanuel Barber of Canyon Springs in the division final, 15-4.

In reaching the championship match, Vasquez’s toughest match turned out to be a 5-4 verdict over Royal’s Deric Ginther in a second-round bout Friday.

Amir Hassan of Westlake, who won his first CIF-Southern Section championship last week, settled for fourth place after advancing to the 152-pound semifinals. He lost to top-seeded and eventual champion Luke Wilson of Righetti, 9-6.
