The first time Grant Weiss told Oxnard High track and field coach Rich Rosin he wanted to run in the hurdles, the coach told him no.There was no way the coach was going to sacrifice the reliable points Weiss produced as a sprinter merely in order to let him do something he thought would be fun.

“When Grant came to me and wanted to do the hurdles, at first I refused,” Rosin said. “I told him, ‘No, you’re a sprinter and I need you sprinting. If you go over those hurdles and you mess up and fall down and I lose you, it hurts us as a team.’ This was last year.”

Rosin finally came up with an idea.
