
SAN GABRIEL — Johnny Ruiz couldn’t have asked for a better start to Wednesday’s CIF/CGA State Golf Championship at San Gabriel Country Club.After a perfect tee shot, the Camarillo High senior hit his approach shot six inches from the pin, giving him an easy birdie.
Unfortunately for Ruiz, the rest of the day was a struggle.
Ruiz finished his final high school tournament with a 5-over-par 76, tying him for 22nd place among the state’s best players. Austin Smotherman of Del Oro High claimed the title with a 4-under 67. Granite Bay claimed the team title with a 19-over 374.
