Payton Palmer-Newton made a special visit to the classroom of Rio Mesa High boys basketball coach Chris Ruffinelli last week. The senior guard wanted to discuss exactly what his role was on the team. Ruffinelli told Palmer-Newton he wanted him to shoot the ball more.

Palmer-Newton put those words into action on Wednesday night, scoring 13 points to help Rio Mesa defeat Pacifica 58-48 in a Pacific View League game at Rio Mesa High.

“He stepped up huge tonight for us and was really a difference-maker in this game,” Ruffinelli said. “At the beginning of the season, he was too much of a distributor and not looking for his shot. I’ve been telling him over and over he has to take the open shots. We believe he can make them, he just has to believe he can make them.”
