Breanna Gonzales had every excuse to miss practice.

The Oxnard High senior had spent the morning at UCLA receiving treatment for cancer, and the drive back was crawling along with traffic.

But Gonzales was determined to make it to the softball field before her team packed its equipment and headed home.

Cancer may have taken her mother and it may have sapped her energy, but Gonzales wasn’t going to let it take away the sport she loved.
