Oxnard High wasn’t about to take any charity from Rio Mesa in its boys basketball game Wednesday night at home, but the once the Yellowjackets were given some, they weren’t about to turn it down.
Connecting on 22 of 25 free throws (88 percent), Oxnard had an easy time defeating Rio Mesa 58-46 in a Pacific View League game.
Matt Ramon led all scorers with 21 points and also brought down nine rebounds to lead the Yellowjackets (16-2, 2-0).
The game, an important showdown between the league’s top two teams, went all Oxnard’s way and gave Ramon — The Star’s boys athlete of the week — optimism for the road ahead.
