After his team scored the tying touchdown in the first overtime period in its game with Pacifica, Oxnard High coach Mark Beckham rolled the dice.
Beckham called for a two-point conversion rather than playing for another overtime period and the strategy worked.
Running back Oscar Garcia snuck over the goal line just before a host of Pacifica defenders pushed him back, giving the Yellowjackets a 36-35 victory over the host Tritons to clinch second place in the Pacific View League.
“We decided after they scored that we were going to go for two if we scored,” Beckham said. “They have so many athletes that we didn’t want to go to a second overtime.”
