One errant throw by Oscar Sandoval put his team in a three-run hole in the first inning. One strong outing by the Oxnard High senior enabled the Yellowjackets to vault to the top of the Pacific View League baseball standings.

Sandoval’s throwing error on a bunt by Elijah Ontiveros brought home two Rio Mesa baserunners and allowed the Spartans to put up a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of their key matchup at Oxnard on Friday afternoon.

Thereafter, the ace left-hander was all but untouchable. Sandoval yielded a double and bunt single to the first two batters he faced, then allowed just two more hits over eight strong innings in a game Oxnard won in the bottom of the ninth, 4-3.
