Debbie Blum stood near a wall of mirrors in the dance studio at Rio Mesa High School last week, watching her students rehearse for a show. The studio, where she has taught classes such as beginning movement, hip-hop and ballet, has been her home away from home for 19 years.

“We started with just one (class), and then it just grew and grew,” said Blum, 60.

For the past decade, she has taught five dance classes a day and as many as 270 students each semester. Classes range from beginning to advanced, with some meeting college admissions requirements as a fine arts credit.
