Hueneme hosts AVID Workshop

AVID Ventura County, in conjunction with AVID Region 8 (Kern. San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties), holds workshops a couple of times each school year. Hueneme High School hosted the workshop on Thursday, March 1st.Administrators, counselors, AVID Coordinators, and AVID teachers from south Santa Barbara county and Ventura County were in attendance. Beth Polito, Assistant Executive Director for the state of California will be in attendance, along with Phill Britton, AVID Region 8 Director, and Denise Thomas, Ventura County Coordinator.

Speakers included: Bob Bleicher, CSUCI, spoke on college readiness; Edith Belman (HHS class of ’07), CSUN, speaking on AB540; Dr. Jessica Kiernan, spoke on the research she did for her doctoral dissertation on how AVID impacts students.

Attendees also heard from Lupe Zamora, HHS teacher, who presented on how HHS uses the AVID Club to coordinate community service opportunities, and Julio Cabral, speaking on the AVID Updraft program, which provides the AVID elective class taught in Spanish for students not quite yet proficient in English language skills.

Attendees were also able to view a class conducting a Socratic seminar (moderated by an AVID tutor), a Socratic seminar (student moderated), and AVID tutorials.
