Salvador “Sal” Martinez, son of Salvador and Andrea Martinez, said he can’t say no to someone who asks for a helping hand.

The Somis teen volunteered at his school library and office during his free periods. He helped librarian Julie Gonzales organize shelves, take inventory and move heavy boxes of books into storage.

“I would be busy, but I felt wrong saying no,” the young man said. “I love helping teachers.”

He also worked with his aunt on the weekends at her grocery store, the Somis Market and Restaurant.

Salvador’s goodwill earned him two People’s ChoiceAwards at Frontier High. He also maintained good grades.

A car enthusiast who can change his truck’s oil and fix the brakes, Salvador wants to become an auto mechanic.

He’ll attend Ventura College in the fall and said he hopes his accomplishments serve as a good example to his 10-year-old sister, Maria.

“I don’t want her to see me graduate and get a normal job,” Salvador said. “I want her to see she has to go to college.”

Salvador will be the first in his family to attend college.
