On Friday May 4th students from OHS, PHS, HHS, CIHS, and FHS participated in the 4th annual Youth Empowerment Summit hosted by Oxnard Community College. Students that were selected to partake in the service learning opportunity had to meet the following criteria: 1) at or below a 2.0 G.P.A. 2) have been through SARB process 3) suspended or expelled 4) at-risk of dropping out.

This effort was an attempt to reengage students that find themselves unmotivated, pushed out by the system, and disconnected from school. Therefore, Memo Martinez and Jorge Napoles, High Risk Outreach Consultants in the Student Services Department, secured funding to work with this vulnerable population. As a result, this first time effort netted 150 students that met
or exceeded the aforementioned criteria. Consequently, students were exposed to career workshops that ranged from law, financial planning, to medicine. Students who may have never had this opportunity before were ecstatic about this chance to meet professionals and to even be on a college campus. Ultimately, the event was a success and this particular brand of outreach will be an ongoing effort for the outreach consultant team. We would like to thank the following folks that were also instrumental in the success of the event: Augie Maciel Attendance Advisor CIHS, Ivan Kozin Counselor CIHS, Susan Islas G. Tech CIHS, Rogelio Jimenez Attendance Advisor PHS, Kim Dallape FHS, Emigdio Cordova OHS, Dr. Larry Miller HHS.
