For months Hueneme High special-education teacher Jason Font watched school administrators search for a new varsity wrestling coach.
As a former assistant coach with the program from 1999 through 2006, Font knew the time and effort that were needed to run the program. With two young children at home, Font wasn’t sure he had the time needed to give it the proper attention.
As the candidates passed on the job, Hueneme wrestlers kept dropping by Font’s room to encourage him to take the job, but he remained reluctant to apply.
Font knew if the school couldn’t find a coach for this season, there was a good chance the wrestling program would go away permanently. He talked to his wife, Gabriella, who gave him her blessing to apply for the job. He was offered and accepted.
