On the soccer field, Everardo Fernandez is, has always been, and most likely will always be a central defender.Which is why it was so extraordinary last month to see the 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior in the opposing penalty area, slipping the ball through an opposing defender’s legs with a blind backheel before rolling a pass across the goal line for a teammate to tap into the opposing goal.
It was the type of creative inspiration typically reserved for the midfield maestro, rather than the hulking destroyer.
But that’s the type of unconventional leader the Channel Islands High boys soccer team has in Fernandez.
