PASADENA — A year ago, Camarillo High golfer Johnny Ruiz shot an uncharactertistic 9-over-par 81 at the CIF State Golf Championship at Poppy Hills. From the minute Ruiz walked off the course, his goal was to make it back to the state tournament and show the skills that has made him one of the top juniors in Southern California.

On Thursday, Ruiz turned that goal into reality by firing a 3-under 69 at the CIF/SCGA Southern California Championship at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Ruiz was one of only three players to break 70, with his 69 earning him a third-place trophy and leaving him three shots behind winner Bryson DeChambeau of Clovis East.
