The two heavyweights of the Pacific View League slugged it out Friday night. Call it the Thrilla in Camarilla.

Corbin Covey caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Travis Valdez with 2:18 left to give host Camarillo High a 31-26 victory over Pacifica and at least a share of the league championship. The winning reception came just over a minute after Pacifica had taken the lead on a 29-yard scoring pass from Nick Davis to Taraun Nixon.

The game was definitely a slugfest, living up to its title billing. The two schools could still wind up in a tie for the league title if Pacifica beats Oxnard next week and Rio Mesa upsets Camarillo. But if form holds, Camarillo (8-1, 4-0) should claim the championship outright next week.

“Wow, that was a heck of a game. That was a lot of fun,” Camarillo coach Dennis Riedmiller said. “It was too bad someone had to lose that one.”
