Losing on the road was bad enough, but there was no way the Camarillo High girls basketball team was going to let Rio Mesa beat the Scorpions in their own house.
Facing an all-or-nothing championship scenario, Camarillo defeated Rio Mesa 67-53 on Tuesday night at Camarillo High to force a share of the Pacific View League title between the rivals.
Camarillo (21-6, 9-1) kept its home record unblemished to secure its first league title since 2001 while Rio Mesa (21-4, 9-1) had its 15-game winning streak snapped.
“I feel like we accomplished our team goal and it’s so exciting to finally put another year up on our banner,” Camarillo sophomore Lynn Leaupepe said. “I am so happy right now. It makes all the hard work we did through practices and team bonding really pay off.”
