Camarillo outlasts Rio Mesa in volleyball thriller

Jake Maulhardt rose high above the net and blocked the ball back to the floor.He exulted and was quickly surrounded by his Camarillo High boys volleyball teammates in celebration of a five-game win — 21-25, 25-12, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14 — over visiting Rio Mesa on Thursday night.

Camarillo and Rio Mesa entered the match with identical 4-0 records in Pacific View League play with neither team dropping a game until Thursday night. The Scorpions have the early edge for first place with the rematch set for May 1 at Rio Mesa.

Rio Mesa (16-7, 4-1) is ranked No. 6 in the CIF Division 3 rankings, while Camarillo (15-4, 5-0) is at No. 7.
