The Camarillo High football team may no longer have Jake Maulhardt going deep for highlight-reel catches or Conrad Kotake speeding past defenders for long runs.

What they do have is returning starting quarterback Travis Valdez, who along with experienced wide receiver Corbin Covey, provided Camarillo with a strong foundation on offense in a 28-7 Scorpions win over host Buena on Friday night.

Valdez completed 22 of 32 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Covey caught both touchdown passes and finished the evening with 115 yards on 16 catches.

“That’s a huge key with Travis there because he knows the offense inside and out,” Camarillo coach Dennis Riedmiller said. “He … does a real good job of calling off plays at the line so that really really helps us.”
