Last school year students at Hueneme High School in the Go Green Club completed the first ever waste audit at Hueneme High School that showed 28% of the 700 pounds of trash throw away every day could be recycled (Half of the 28% was glass, plastic, and aluminum). To promote our project we held an Earth Day Celebration where 400 students signed a petition in support of adding recycling bins on the quad and in the cafeteria while also committing to using them. The club under the guidance of HHS teacher Harmony Lane and Cameron Yee of CAUSE then applied for and received an Ocean Guardian School Grant to start a recycling program at HHS from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
During the summer of 2011 we continued to meet and renamed the club Be The Change with the mission to come together take actions into our own hands and making a difference in our schools, environment, community, and our lives!
With the Ocean Guardian School grant for the 2011-12 we have accomplished the following:
- Learned about Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the Santa Clara River watershed focusing on the Ormond Beach Wetlands. We had presentations From Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy and Channel Islands Restoration. We also went on a field trip to Anacapa Island and explored the tidepools of Frenchy’s Cove
- Put recycling bins on campus and started a recycling program. On an average day we recycle 10 pounds of plastic, glass, and aluminum bottles and cans. This means since we fully implemented the program in December, we have recycled 800 pounds through mid April.
- Forty of us removed 187 pounds of trash/recyclables from the Ormond Beach Wetlands/Lagoon. Some of the things from three clean ups we picked up: 184 bottle caps, 132 plastic grocery bags, 511 cigarette butts, and 104 styrofoam food containers.
Please join Be the Change next year. You can start by participating in our summer Ormond Beach Clean up on Wednesday June 13 at 10:00 a.m. Meet at CAUSE Centro Mujer at 4225 Saviers Road, Oxnard. See you there!
