Host Camarillo, led by sophomore quarterback Michael Marin’s 178 yards and two touchdowns, held off Buena 20-15 in a nonleague football game.
Marin knew last summer he was going to have to take the reins for Camarillo when junior Travis Valdez was injured. Buena’s Kendrick Mathis, ostensibly a running back and arguably the best athlete on the team, didn’t know he was going to have to fill in for David Corral until this week.
It was apparent Mathis needed some time to get his feet under him, at one point throwing eight straight incomplete passes, but he connected on 5 of 6 in the second half to make the game close.
