Ventura County students remember Sept. 11 attacks

Students in high school now were so young when the United States was attacked Sept. 11, 2001, that their memories of the event might be dim, but they still realize how it has affected their lives.During ceremonies held Friday at schools across Ventura County, students were reminded of what happened that fateful day.

“I was in kindergarten,” said Gabriela Melgoza, 15, a student at Oxnard High School. “It brought us into the war with Iraq for sure, and now you have to get to the airport three hours early to make sure we don’t have bombs.”

St. Bonaventure High in Ventura, Oxnard High and Camarillo High were among the schools that held commemorations. The events focused not only on the tragedy of the day when almost 3,000 lives were lost but also on the cohesiveness of the country in the aftermath. …
