After shooting a career-best 5-under-par 67 in her practice round at Poppy Hills, Oxnard High senior Drew Thomas was excited about her chances of going low at Tuesday’s Girls State Golf Championship.

But fighting a case of the butterflies caused by some self-induced pressure, Thomas struggled from start to finish. The senior opened her round with two straight bogeys and never got on track, finishing with an 84.

But Thomas did finish her round and her high school career on a high note, making a birdie on the 18th hole.

“After playing so well in my practice round, I’m disappointed that I didn’t play better,” Thomas said by phone from Monterey. “I loved the course, but I just didn’t play it well today.
