Travis Valdez seemingly possesses a host of intangibles as the next quarterback of the Camarillo High football team, including work ethic, enthusiasm and perseverance.

Then there’s patience, which has become an unforeseen early — and harsh — lesson.

After earning the starting assignment with solid play in summer passing leagues, Valdez’s debut as the Scorpions quarterback has been delayed at least one week. He broke a bone in his left hand when he fell off a fence last month, and has worn a cast as he awaits the duration of the healing process.

As for the injury’s cause, Valdez strikes a sheepish stance. …
