As the last of the homecoming fireworks were unleashed over Ken Benefield Stadium, the Rio Mesa High football team didn’t seem to notice. It was too busy celebrating like they had just clinched the Pacific View League title game, rather than set the stage for one.

“This was almost like a league championship game,” said Rio Mesa running back Tanner Wrout.

Wrout ran for a 4-yard touchdown, quarterback Trenton Thornton hit sophomore Davonte Nunnery for a 30-yard touchdown pass and the Spartans defense made it hold up for a 14-10 win before an teeming homecoming crowd at Channel Islands on Friday night.
