Rio Mesa High School wins AAUW Knowledge Bowl

The annual academic competition was sponsored by the American Association of University Women. Ten high school teams answered 40 questions in each round. Topics included history, geography, math, science and literature.

Rio Mesa finished first with 43 points. It was the school’s first Knowledge Bowl win in 16 years. Thousand Oaks High School took second with 41 points, and Ventura High School finished third with 37 points.

Rio Mesa’s co-captains are Chris Russell and Daniel Corbett. Team members are Isi Cruz-Rivera, Balbina Olguin, Scott Raymond, Evan Crook, Douglas Roffel, Elyza Baltazar, Scotty Probert, Jack Ito, Angel Castaneda and Stefan Tchoubineh. Teacher Chris Moody is the coach.

Other high schools competing were Buena, Channel Islands, Hueneme, Oxnard, Pacifica, Santa Paula and St. Bonaventure.
