A key play on defense, a steady ground attack and a solid performance in the kicking game helped Channel Islands High close out its nonleague football schedule with an impressive 50-14 victory over visiting Santa Paula on Friday night.

After the Raiders punted twice and threw an interception on their first three possessions, the possibility of a 50-point outburst did not appear promising. But Jeremy Sanchez returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first quarter and that crucial play turned out to be the spark Channel Islands needed.

Richard Gray led the Raiders ground attack with 157 yards on 18 carries and quarterback Steven Gutierrez threw two touchdown passes to Jeremiah Valoaga as Channel Islands improved to 4-1 heading into next week’s Pacific View League opener at Camarillo.
