Oxnard High’s game plan in its Pacific View League finale against Pacifica was as simple as it gets — let senior tailback Grant Weiss loose and hope the offense could light up the scoreboard as often as possible.

The plan worked, but by the narrowest of margins.

Weiss turned in a spectacular performance, rushing 28 times for 367 yards and seven touchdowns as Oxnard outlasted Pacifica in a thriller, 56-55, on Thursday night at Oxnard High.

After the game, the Yellowjackets (5-5, 3-2) awaited the outcome of a coin flip to determine if they would qualify for the CIF playoffs as the second-place team in the PVL. Channel Islands won the coin flip, however, and Oxnard will have to hope for a at-large berth into the playoffs next week.
