Several Student speakers shared their personal struggles and the relief and sense of pride they felt as they would soon accept their diplomas or certificates. For many graduates the learning won’t stop at there, many have plans to attend local community colleges and universities in the fall. Their high school diplomas or GEDs are not mere pieces of paper to these students, they are passports to career advancement or higher education. They are hope for a more fulfilling life.
President Barak Obama said, “Dropping out of high school is no longer an option. It’s not just quitting on yourself, it’s quitting on your country – and this country needs and values the talents of every American.” These students didn’t give up in spite of all the challenges of work and family obligations.
With the shake of a hand and the grasp of their diploma, the Oxnard Adult School graduates of 2011 proved that, whether your 18 or 80, it’s never too late to follow a dream. They are an inspiration to all students, especially those for whom success doesn’t always come easily.
