
Hueneme High School senior Jackie Hernandez, 17, was among the first students to hit the equipment at the school’s new $100,000 fitness center, which was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting this week.But instead of the school physical education teacher, well-known fitness expert Jake Steinfeld of Body by Jake — who also is chairman of the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports — stepped in to count out reps for the teen.
In September, Hueneme was named one of three winners of the 2011 Governor’s Challenge Competition, along with Ruskin School in San Jose and Loma Vista Middle School in Riverside. The schools received new fitness centers, funded largely funded by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation.
