One-on-one coverage didn’t work. So the Canyon High football team tried two defensive backs, then three.

No matter how many defenders or what type coverage the host Cowboys threw at Jake Maulhardt on Friday night, the Camarillo High senior wide receiver kept hauling in pass receptions.

He didn’t stop until he crushed two stalwart Ventura County records.

Maulhardt, a 6-foot-7 senior, finished with an astounding 28 catches for 347 yards in Canyon’s 52-28 victory. The historic performance surpassed the 19-catch, 303-yard outing former Thousand Oaks High star Richard Mullaney put up last November in a playoff loss to Oaks Christian.
