Four Ventura County schools are among 116 statewide finalists in the 2011 Governor’s Challenge Competition.

The contest promotes physical activity and health among students.

McAuliffe and Fremont schools in the Oxnard School District, Hueneme High School in the Oxnard Union High School District and Ladera School in the Conejo Valley Unified School District are in the running for top prizes.

Six schools statewide will win grand prizes — a new fitness center valued at $100,000.

In addition, 11 schools will be named regional winners and get $6,000 each for new fitness equipment and other school supplies, organizers said.

The challenge requires students to exercise 30 to 60 minutes a day for at least three days a week for a month.

Winners will be announced in September.
