Gov. Jerry Brown has named a former Hueneme High School student to a state committee charged with increasing access to college.

Johnny Garcia Vasquez, 22, was appointed as a student representative to the 15-member California Student Aid Commission, the governor’s office announced this week.

Vasquez, a former Associated Student Body president at Hueneme High, is working toward a bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley, majoring in ethnic studies.

“My goal is to create more access and affordability for higher education,” said Vasquez of his role on the committee.
