Years ago when Gary Porter was on Donnie Rea’s staff at Channel Islands High, Rea had a wide receiver pass in the playbook that the Raiders used to pull out a win.

On Friday night, Porter, now the head coach at Channel Islands, used that same play to help his team defeat Rea’s Pacifica High team 42-35 in overtime.

With Channel Islands down by a touchdown with 1:20 seconds, tight end Jeremiah Valoaga took a backward pass from Steven Gutierrez and then fired a perfect strike to Anthony Harper for a 47-yard touchdown that tied the game at 35-35.

Getting the ball first in overtime, the Raiders (5-2, 1-1 Pacific View League) scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown when Richard Gray took a screen pass from Gutierrez and rambled 11 yards for the score.
